UBA National Essay Competition 2024 for Nigerian Students

The UBA National Essay Competition 2024 invites applications from qualified senior secondary students across Nigeria. This initiative, organized by the UBA Foundation, aims to promote a reading culture while fostering healthy intellectual competition among young minds in Nigeria and throughout Africa.

Competition Details

This year, the UBA National Essay Competition offers impressive financial awards to the top winners. The first-place winner will receive an educational grant of 7.5 million naira, while the second and third place winners will be awarded 5 million naira and 3.5 million naira, respectively. These grants can be used for tuition at any African university of the winner’s choice.

Essay Topic

The theme for the 2024 competition is: “The Impact of Carbon Emission on Climate Change in Nigeria: Discuss the Challenges and Proffer Solutions.” Participants are encouraged to engage deeply with this crucial topic, highlighting the challenges posed by carbon emissions and proposing effective solutions.

Eligibility Criteria

To participate in the UBA National Essay Competition 2024, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Status: Must be a Nigerian Senior Secondary School Student.
  • Contact Information: Complete and accurate contact details are required.
  • Essay Submission: Submit a handwritten essay with a maximum of 750 words (typed submissions will not be accepted).
  • Photograph: Include a recent passport-sized photograph.
  • Identification: Upload a scanned copy of either a Birth Certificate, National ID, or International Passport.

Selection Procedure

Entries will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges comprised of professors from reputable Nigerian universities. The review process will involve the following steps:

  • Shortlisting: The panel will shortlist 75 essays for further evaluation.
  • Regional Test: The shortlisted participants will then take part in a regional test across four zones (North, South, East, and West), where they will write a supervised essay. Participants will need to select their preferred region during application.
  • Final Round: From the regional tests, 20 finalists will be chosen to compete in the final round at the UBA Head Office in Lagos. Here, the three best essays will be declared the winners.
