Eligibility Criteria for the African Presidential Scholars Program

To be eligible for this prestigious program, applicants must:

  • Be an early career faculty member with less than ten years of teaching experience in higher education at an African institution.
  • Hold an ongoing position at a college or university in Africa.
  • Provide a letter of recommendation from the head of department, dean, or vice chancellor, demonstrating institutional support.
  • Be able to reside in the USA for a duration of five months.

Application Process

The application process consists of two pathways. Candidates from Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia can apply directly. Those from other countries must be nominated by a University of Michigan faculty member who is familiar with their work. The nominating faculty must:

  • Complete the online nomination form (U-M login required).
  • Submit a letter of endorsement, committing to mentorship and possibly providing office space for the candidate during their residency.

Upon receipt of the completed nomination form and support letter, the nominated candidate will receive a link to the application portal.

All applicants must:

  • Complete the online application form (available only for candidates from specified countries).
  • Upload a current curriculum vitae.
  • Submit a scholarly program or research proposal not exceeding five pages.
  • Provide contact details for their head of department, dean, or vice chancellor to write a support letter.
