Applications are now open for the Allan Gray Centre for Africa Entrepreneurship (AGCAE) PhD and Masters Scholarships for the 2025 academic session. These scholarships offer African students the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, beginning in February 2025. The AGCAE aims to foster entrepreneurial ecosystem development across Africa by creating, integrating, and sharing knowledge to drive data-informed and dialogue-based entrepreneurial initiatives, ultimately enhancing community well-being.

Eligibility Criteria for AGCAE PhD and Masters Scholarships 2025
- Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to be considered for the Allan Gray Centre for Africa Entrepreneurship (AGCAE) Postgraduate Scholarships.
- The scholarships are open to South African citizens and foreign nationals from Africa. Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged South Africans and African nationals.
- Candidates must satisfy the minimum admission criteria for postgraduate programmes at Stellenbosch University.
- To apply for a PhD programme, applicants must hold a master’s degree in a relevant field.
- To apply for a Master’s programme, applicants must hold an honours degree in a related field.
- Candidates must have achieved at least a 70% aggregate in their previous studies:
- For the Doctoral Scholarships, a 70% aggregate in their master’s programme is required.
- For the Master’s Scholarships, a 70% aggregate in their honours programme is required.
- Only applications within one of AGCAE’s research themes will be considered.
- Only candidates who have applied for the relevant PhD or master’s programme will be shortlisted.
Scholarship Benefits
The AGCAE Postgraduate Scholarships offer significant financial support to successful applicants:
Doctoral Scholarships are valued at R250,000 per year for a duration of three years.
Master’s Scholarships are valued at R150,000 per year for a duration of two years.
Application Process
To apply for the AGCAE PhD and Masters Scholarships for the 2025 academic year, candidates should follow these steps:
Apply for the relevant PhD or Master’s programme through the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) School of Public Leadership (SPL) at Stellenbosch University. The application can be submitted via the Stellenbosch University Central Applicant Portal by clicking here.
Complete the relevant AGCAE Application Form for either PhD or Master’s applications.
Other Application Requirements
A motivation letter for the scholarship (maximum length: one A4 page).
A research concept note (no specific length) outlining your proposed research topic.
Application Deadline
The deadline for submitting applications for the AGCAE Postgraduate Scholarships is 30th September 2024. Be sure to apply before this date to be considered for the 2025 cohort.
